I’m often asked questions like: “How much exercise do I need to do to lose a decent amount of weight?” or, “What kind of exercises do I need to do that will be most effective in losing weight?” and “Which is better at losing weight; weight training or aerobics?”
Well, I will attempt to answer these very important questions. But first, I must say that if you are embarking on a workout routine solely to lose weight, you might be very disappointed with the results. Let me explain why.
Lets consider the math.
1 pound of body fat is equal to about 3500 calories. The saying, “You can always eat more than you can exercise” is very true in this case. In order to burn 3500 calories, you would have to do the following:
The amount of calories your particular body can burn during exercise will largely depend on your body weight, Basal Metabolic Rate (BMR) and your Body Mass Index (BMI). However, to keep this example simple, let’s assume you currently weigh 160lbs.
To burn 3500 calories, you would have to:
- Play squash for almost 5 hours.
- Run at a pace of 11 mins (per mile) for 8-10 hours.
- Back pack without a load for 9-11 hours.
- Play tennis for 8-12 hours.
- Cycle at a leisurely pace at 10 mph for 9-12 hours.
- Play badminton for 10 hours.
- Train with free weights for 10-12 hours.
- Play golf for almost 14 hours.
- Walk at a pace of 3.0 mph for 13-14 hours.
